No one can deny that there is something magical about Topeka in the wintertime,
especially when snowflakes start to fall upon the city. The beautiful
sprinkles can quickly become hazardous, however, if people do not respect
the weather conditions and adjust their driving habits. If you are thinking
of a road trip this holiday season with the family, or if you need to
commute often for other reasons, you must be careful on the road.
To help increase your chances of avoiding a car accident this winter, always
keep these 5 helpful hints in mind:
Slowing down: Roads slick with snow, ice, or even melted snow for that matter are dangerous.
In the rain, it is often said that you should slow down around 10 miles
per hour. In wintry conditions, it doesn’t hurt to consider going
at least 15 under the limit.
Preparing your tires: If possible, switch out your tires for snow tires with deeper treads,
especially if you are going to travel to higher altitudes or areas that
are sure to see regular snowfall. You should also get tire chains, just
in case things get rough.
Staying put: Unless you absolutely have to drive somewhere in the snow, you shouldn’t;
it is just that dangerous to be on the roads when it is cold and inclement.
If you find yourself getting caught in a storm, pull over when safe and
get away from the road as much as you can – maybe in an adjacent
parking lot – to wait it out.
Littering, in a good way: Cat litter can actually be a great way to get some traction under your
tires if you find yourself stuck in some snow or wet mud. Keep a bag of
it in your trunk and pour it over and around your tires. If you happen
to have salt, use that, too.
Maintaining elbow room: Even if you are doing your best to be careful on the wintry roads, others
might not be. Give other motorists plenty of space to maneuver and don’t
tailgate – try the five second rule, rather than three, in bad weather.
Speaking of other drivers, if someone should crash into over the holidays,
try not to let it ruin the whole season. Instead, keep in mind that there
are compassionate and knowledgeable Topeka
car accident attorneys at Palmer Law Group LLP. Our firm was founded in 1980 on the
belief that people should be able to recover comfortably after being hurt
by the negligence of another, and we have secured
more than $60 million for our clients since 2000 alone.
